Repowering
Your solar panels have served their purpose. It’s time for the next chapter.
Thousands of industrial PV installations in Flanders are nearing the end of their certificate period. That’s not a problem, it’s an opportunity. Repowering gives your roof a second life, with more power, better technology, and a higher return than when you started.

Efficiency of new panels
The tipping point is approaching. And it’s predictable.
Between 2007 and 2011, industrial PV installations were deployed on a large scale in Flanders. The driving force? Green energy certificates that guaranteed returns for 15 to 20 years. Those certificates are now expiring—and with that, the economic picture for thousands of installations is changing fundamentally.
That doesn’t mean your system will stop working tomorrow. But it does mean that the financial foundation supporting your current system is disappearing. And that the technology from 15 years ago no longer gets the most out of your roof.
At the same time, we’re seeing that many business owners aren’t actively addressing this yet. It’s understandable—the system is running, so there’s no sense of urgency. But if everyone tries to repower at the same time, it will lead to waiting lists with installers, longer delivery times, and increased pressure on permitting processes.
It’s not about tearing it down and starting over. It’s about upgrading smartly.
Repowering is the modernization or replacement of an existing PV system to maximize its efficiency once again. It’s not just about “installing new panels”—it’s about redesigning your energy system based on how your business consumes energy today and in the future.
Complete Replacement
Old panels and inverters are replaced with new technology. You can install two to three times more capacity on the same roof area—with a significantly higher yield per square meter.
Partial upgrade
Sometimes the panels are still in good condition, but the inverters need to be replaced. Or it may make sense to add extra capacity. Repowering is a customized solution: you replace what’s necessary and retain what still has value.
System Optimization
Repowering is also the perfect time to make your system smarter. Consider integrating battery energy storage (BESS), an energy management system (EMS), or control based on dynamic energy prices. This way, you’ll get more out of every kWh.
What are the concrete benefits of repowering?
More power, same roof
Modern panels deliver up to three times more power per square meter than models from 2008–2011. Your roof is already there—it’s just that its potential hasn’t been fully realized yet.
Lower risk of unexpected downtime
Outdated inverters and degrading panels pose a growing risk. Repowering prevents unplanned downtime and the associated production losses.
Ready for tomorrow’s energy market
Negative electricity prices, feed-in restrictions, grid congestion—the energy market has fundamentally changed since 2010. A repowered system with BESS and EMS is designed to address these challenges.
Stronger financial picture
No more certificates required. With higher self-consumption, smart storage, and lower operating costs, you can build a business case that stands on its own.
Enhanced sustainability reporting
A modernized system fits into your ESG reporting and demonstrably contributes to your CO₂ reduction goals. No greenwashing—just measurable results.
Circular value of old components
Discarded panels are not waste. Through triage and selection, components can be reused or recycled, contributing to cost reduction and circularity.
Repowering is a specialty. We make it easy to understand.
Efficient repowering requires more than just replacing solar panels. It’s a comprehensive undertaking: engineering, component triage, reuse, grid connection, permits, and scenario analysis.
Solora guides you through the entire process—from the initial assessment to commissioning and monitoring. No surprises, no unanswered questions. A single point of contact, from start to finish.
Technical Audit & Data Analysis
We assess the current state of your system: performance, degradation, inverter data, and roof condition. No assumptions—just measurable facts.
Engineering & Design
The new system is designed based on your actual consumption profile, roof capacity, and future energy strategy. Includes BESS and EMS where relevant.
Execution & Installation
Professional dismantling, sorting of old components, and installation of the new system. Minimal impact on your business operations.
Monitoring & Optimization
We remain involved after delivery. Active monitoring, performance optimization, and maintenance ensure that your investment delivers long-term performance.
What else you’d like to know about repowering
No. Repowering isn’t about defective panels, but about economic optimization. Even if your system is still technically functional, its efficiency may be well below its potential due to degradation and outdated technology. The right time to repower is when your certificate period ends or when it’s more cost-effective to upgrade than to continue operating as is.
That depends on their condition. Panels that are still functional can be reused elsewhere. Panels that have reached the end of their lifespan are recycled. Solora handles the sorting, logistics, and responsible disposal. There’s value in what you’re replacing, even if it’s no longer on your roof.
From the initial audit to completion, we generally estimate a few months, depending on the scale and complexity. The technical audit and scenario analysis typically take 2 to 4 weeks. The installation itself varies by project. Starting preparations early gives you the most flexibility.
Absolutely, and it’s often the ideal time to do so. Repowering involves redesigning your energy system. Integrating a BESS and an EMS makes it possible to maximize self-consumption, shave off peaks, and respond to dynamic prices. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
Not necessarily. In some cases, it’s more cost-effective to repower sooner, especially if your inverters are already due for replacement or if your energy consumption has changed significantly. We calculate the optimal timing for each scenario. Sometimes that’s now, sometimes it’s in two years. Always backed by data.
Solora doesn’t think in terms of panels, but in terms of energy systems. We combine expertise in PV, BESS, EMS, and monitoring into a comprehensive design. For us, repowering isn’t a sales process, but a technically and financially sound advisory process. With a single point of contact for the entire process—from audit to maintenance.
