Solar Energy Is the Largest Energy Source in the EU for the First Time

In June 2025, solar energy reached a historic milestone: for the first time, it was the largest source of electricity in the EU, according to a new report by the energy think tank Ember. Accounting for 22.1% of total electricity generation, solar power surpassed nuclear power (21.8%) and wind power (15.8%) last month.

📈 Record output: More than 45 TWh of sunlight was converted into electricity, a 22% increase compared to June 2024.

🇪🇺 Nationwide breakthrough: Individual records were set in 13 EU countries, including Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and Poland. In the Netherlands, solar energy even accounted for more than 40% of the electricity mix.

📉 Coal use continues to decline: Coal’s share fell to a historic low of 6.1% in June. This is a stark contrast to last year (8.8%).

The major opportunity now lies in the smart combination of battery storage and flexibility. This will allow us to extend the power of solar energy into the morning and evening hours—times when non-renewable energy still drives up peak prices today.
